have a break
Buildings are abandoned for all sorts of reasons. Tenants move elsewhere, organisations cease to exist, spaces no longer meet requirements. Whatever the reason, the contents are shipped elsewhere or dumped. Yet a vacant building is rarely emptied entirely. All sorts of objects are remain for reasons we can only guess at. Does anyone still use them? Is that radiator so firmly anchored that taking it away would damage it irreparably? Are those sockets and shelves so cheap they’re not worth removing? Are sunblinds difficult to take down and put up again? Best leave it all behind. But maybe they weren’t left behind at all. Maybe some form of secret life continues in these seemingly abandoned spaces. The stack of paper plates must have been put there recently. The telephone looks as though you could plug it in and make a call. And those tables are waiting for someone to sit down and start work.
